Prof. PhDr. Martin Hilský, CSc. (*1943) is a professor of English, translator and the most prominent Czech Shakespearologist. He received numerous awards, and in 2001 Queen Elizabeth II made him Member of the Order of the British Empire for his contribution to the dissemination of English literature in the Czech Republic and for his translations of Shakespeare.
From 1989 to 1998 he was Head of the Institute of English and American Studies at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University. He also worked at the Faculty of Arts at the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice, where he conducted seminars on English literature.
He has been translating Shakespeare for more than forty years. He has translated the complete works of Shakespeare into Czech. His translations of Shakespeare are frequently performed on the stages of Czech theatres.
